Great article today in the St. Paul Pioneer Press (registration may be required) about this weekend's U.S. Pond Hockey Championships over on Lake Calhoun.
Admission is free, there will be concessions available, and a family rink has been set up as well.
There will be 116 teams competing, including 'celeb' teams featuring Gov. Tim Pawlenty, newly elected St. Paul mayor Chris Coleman, and a number of former NHL players, including former Gopher and Hobey Baker award winner Brian Bonin.
The teams will be divided into 3 divisions, open (over 18), women's open (over 18), and men's senior (over 50). Teams compete 4-on-4, and there are no goalies.
Congratulatulations to Fred Haberman, founder of the championship, for all of his hard work and dedication to making this happen. And 'thank you' to Mother Nature for her cooperation in providing enough cold weather to make the ice safe to skate on.
More pond hockey next weekend as well - the Minnesota Wild Pond Hockey Championships over on Lake Phalen will happen as a part of St. Paul's Winter Carnival.
