Under New Management

As you will see from the dates of the posts below, this hasn't been an active blog for some time now. Marcus and I are no longer involved in real estate...but I can see from the stats meter that this blog still receives several visits a day. It is a great resource for businesses and organizations in St. Anthony Park, so I'm going to leave it available for people, and connect you to my in-laws, Art and Corinne Bustad.

Crawling for Art

Ahhhh...the 79 degree day yesterday thawed out trees, people, grass and assorted other creatures and plant life. Spring is here, no doubt about it.

Now, the fun starts.... Here in the Twin Cities, we have a world class selection of activities to occupy ourselves in the spring and summer time.

Kicking it off - the St. Paul Art Crawl. As you wind your way from art space to art space, and gallery to gallery, you can see a wide range of wonderful work - from paintings and sculpture, to jewlery and weavings.

Lenten Art Display from He Qi

Wednesday marked the start of Lent, the 40 days before Easter. Christians use this time to reflect and contemplate the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection.

At St. Anthony Park Lutheran Church, this Lenten season brings an art display from the Chinese contemporary Christian artist, He Qi (pronounced Ho-Chee). His work is an explosion of color, line and shape - bold and dramatic.

His artworks illustrate biblical messages, and beloved Christian stories - in new and powerful ways. Using traditional Chinese techniques (like silk weaving), traditional mediums (gouache paint) and even technology (computers and printers), his art speaks to the heart of people.

Dr. He Qi lived through the challenges of the cultural revolution in China, and came to the Christian faith by choice. With a deep background in art history and art technique, his work is a powerful message of faith.

The public is invited to view He Qi's work on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or on Sunday's from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Wednesday evenings are a good time to visit - the church is hosting soup suppers starting at 5:30 p.m. and a Lenten service at 7:00 p.m.

One of He Qi's works will be used to illustrate the Lenten message over each of the next 5 Wednesday's. Visiting pastors will use a different painting each Wednesday to illustrate their sermons. The public is invited to attend any or all of those services.

Thanks, Park Bank!

Attended the recent St. Anthony Park Community Council's Land Use Meeting. Park Midway Bank was on the agenda with plans for their new bank building on the corner of Como and Doswell.

The lunch room at St. Anthony Park Elementary School was packed with interested friends and neighbors. The discussion was lively and energetic - and the feedback to the bank was frank.

The general consensus seemed to be that the current design was not viewed as particularly suitable for that location...and not really suited to the character of the neighborhood itself.

It will be interesting to see what happens regarding design changes - but kudos go to both the bank and the architectural firm for bringing their plans forward for comment. I'm sure it wasn't easy at times to listen to the comments, but I hope it will result in a much more site- and neighborhood- suitable design. Engaging in this type of give-and-take was good for all involved.

Greetings and welcome to the new "St. Anthony Park Blog" - a website devoted to highlighting the best we have to offer in our neighborhood and surrounding areas.

St. Anthony Park is a warm and charming community, tucked away at the western edge of the St. Paul, Minnesota. We have a wide variety of shops and services available to community members and visitors - as well as easy access to recreation, education and entertainment possibilities. This neighborhood sits between Minneapolis and St. Paul - and a short, 10 minute drive takes you to either downtown.

Located between Interstate 94 on the south, Highway 280 on the west, Larpenteur Ave on the north, and Snelling Ave on the east, St. Anthony Park reminds people of "how it used to be."

We are blessed with wonderful vintage homes, quiet streets, tree-shaded parks, and a dedicated community of involved citizens. Our children attend school with their friends, play in the parks and walk to the grocery store.

Community members volunteer in the churches, sing in community choirs, teach at nearby colleges and universities, run a wide range of businesses, ice the rec center rink, gather for progressive dinners...and work all across the Twin Cities.

We want this website to serve as a local resource and source of information. It's a work in progress, and more listings will be added over the days and weeks ahead.
